Corinth Canal and Nafplion Tour
Embarking for the “Corinth Canal and Nafplion Tour” from Athens, our journey will trace the enchanting coastline leading us to the Corinth Canal. Along the way, we’ll make halts for picturesque moments, allowing you to capture the beauty of the scenery. One highlight is the opportunity to stroll across the bridge connecting the mainland’s two sides. Continuing our road trip, the next destination is Nafplio, a city steeped in Greek history, named after Nafplius, the son of Poseidon and Amymone.
Nafplio boasts historical landmarks such as “Bourtzi,” a fortress nestled on an islet in the port, and “Palamidi,” a Venetian stronghold that dominates the cityscape. The architectural tapestry of the old city carries the imprints of diverse conquerors who have left their mark throughout the years. Regarded as one of Greece’s most beautiful cities, Nafplio is a favored retreat for short vacations among the locals.
Upon arriving in the city, our itinerary includes a visit to Palamidi Fortress, constructed by the Venetians in 1687 after a fierce battle with the Ottomans during the Venetian-Turkish War. Standing at an elevation of 216 meters, Palamidi served various roles, including a prison for Theodore Kolokotronis, the chief of the Greek Revolution. Subsequently, our exploration leads us to the “floating” Fortress Bourtzi, accessible by a brief boat ride to the islet. Originally built by the Venetians, it transformed, serving as a fortress, a residence for executioners, and even a hotel.
Concluding our Nafplio adventure, you’ll have the opportunity to wander through the enchanting old city. Its narrow pathways beckon with intriguing local establishments for dining, shopping, and enjoying coffee or ice cream. By the end of this immersive experience, one thing is certain – you’ll have fallen in love with the charm of this quaint and beautiful city. As we bid farewell to Nafplio, a delightful road trip awaits, guiding us back to the vibrant city of Athens.
